Barns Brinton House and GardenÂ
Around 1720, William Barns built the tavern, adorning Flemish bond brickwork, on “Ye Great Road to Nottingham”.Â
From 1722 to 1726 Barns runs the tavern. By 1753 James Brinton bought the property. On September 11, 1777, Brinton witnessed thousands of Crown Forces marching north to engage General Washington at the Brandywine.
The Chads Ford Historical Society (CHFS) purchased the property in 1969 and placed it on the National Register in 1971.

The Spade and Trowel Club has maintained this kitchen garden since the 1980s, featuring a variety of 18th century herbs and vegetables used for food, flavoring and medicine.    When they were initially created, the beds were placed in front of the tavern. In 2015 the garden was rebuilt by volunteers, including the boy scouts. Â

In 2024, the garden was moved to its current location. CHFS had the new brick walls for the beds and brick walkway built and easy access to water. Then, Spade and Trowel Club planted the beds with existing and new plants.  CHFS uses herbs and vegetables to create historically inspired foods at events.

In 2026, the garden and house were open in the PA Garden Party tour. Â
